EYFS to KS1

We plan effectively for the transition from EYFS into Key Stage 1 to preserve the
best of foundation stage practice, whilst recognising key changes that children
would encounter in Key Stage 1, for example:

• effective handover meetings are held between current and new class
  teachers in the summer, where pastoral needs and information about
  learning is passed on about each individual child.
• children will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the KS1
  environment, including their new classroom and the playground.
• opportunities for children and their parents to meet their new KS1
  teacher and familiarise themselves with our routines for a flying start.
• coherent and sequential curriculum which builds on prior knowledge and
  skills.
• children will continue with the Read, Write, Inc phonics scheme from
  reception to KS1, to continue to develop their reading skills.
• cross-curricular themes to ensure that knowledge can be transferred
  between subject disciplines.
• curriculum workshops are held at the start of every term, where we
  communicate with parents the key learning that will take place within
  their KS1 journey and how parents can best support at home.

KS1 to KS2

The transition from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 marks a significant shift in
expectations and attainment for children. The staff at SPWPS play a crucial
role in providing a structured and supportive environment that fosters
confidence and readiness for the changes ahead, for example:

• effective handover meetings are held between current and new class
  teachers in the summer, where pastoral needs and information about
  learning is passed on about each individual child.
• children will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the KS2
  environment.
• opportunities for these children and their parents to meet their new KS2
  teacher and familiarise themselves with new routines and expectations.
• coherent and sequential curriculum which builds on prior knowledge and
  skills, including several points across the KS2 curriculum that link to prior
  learning.
• gradually introducing more opportunities for children to take part in
  independent practice within the lesson, as part of adaptive teaching.
• teaching of Reading, which starts mid-way through Year 2 to ease
  transition into reading lessons in KS2.
• continuation of Read, Write, Inc for children whom still need support with
  phonics.
• continuation of the Power Maths Scheme from KS1 to KS2 to reinforce
  children’s conceptual understanding of maths.
• curriculum workshops held at the start of every term for parents, where
  we communicate key learning that will be taking place in KS2 and how
  they can support their child at home.

The transition from Year 6 to Year 7 marks a significant change for children as
they move from a familiar primary school setting to a larger, secondary school
environment.

• We have clear communication with St Paul’s Way Secondary School to
  ensure a seamless handover of individual children’s pastoral needs and
  learning information.
• Year 6 children have a range of opportunities throughout their time with
  us to visit our secondary school for lessons, workshops and
  performances held by subject-specialist teachers, which also enables
  them to familiarise themselves with the secondary setting.
• Our shared behaviour, attendance & teaching and learning policies
  support the children to understand the routines and expectations within
  our secondary school.
• An inspiring and engaging curriculum throughout the school, which
  fosters opportunities for creative thinking, challenge, independence and
  builds their cultural capital.
• Subject-specialist teaching across KS2, held by secondary school
  teachers for:
