Student Council

School council is an exciting platform for students to develop greater leadership and collectively work on global issues. The school council is also a meaningful way in which students can voice their opinions and have their views considered in decisions which impact them.

Congratulations to the elected members of Student Council following their successful applications from Autumn 1 term. School Council Meetings will take place on Mondays during form-time from Autumn 2 term.

School Council roles and responsibilities:

Form Ambassadors (1 per form) - will represent their form groups during weekly Student Council meetings, taking place during their usual form-time slots on Mondays. Each Form Ambassador will also be asked to identify an area of service that they will seek to support within the school community, from: Careers, Creativity, Reading & Research, Sports, STEM, Equalities, and the Environment. Responsibilities for each area of service will vary but may include, as an example, attending after school events that align with the area of service, helping staff members to deliver assemblies to other year groups, or raise awareness within the school about their area of service.

Year Representatives (1 per year) - in addition to the responsibilities of Form Ambassadors, Year Representatives will be expected to be a key voice for their year group, and may be delegated additional tasks or responsibilities by Student Council leaders. Year Representatives should expect to be involved in fundraising campaigns and assisting with the running of year group events. 

Deputy Senior Leaders (2 per school, from Key Stage 4) : in addition to the responsibilities of Form Ambassadors, Deputy Senior Leaders will assist the Senior Student Leaders with running the School Council and ensuring that Form Ambassadors are able to fulfil their responsibilities. They may support and lead Student Council sessions or activities, or assist the Senior Student Leaders with any tasks they require completed. 

Senior Student Leaders (2 per school, from Year 13) – Senior Student Leaders lead on all aspects of Student Council activity, including fundraising plans, student voice, student council meetings. SSLs are also expected to give presentations to parents and governers at various events throughout the year.

Social Action and Service Programme

A key remit of the School Council will be to drive SPWT’s new Social Action and Service Programme (SASP). Through SASP, students will learn about and engage with different pressing social issues. They will get involved in Activism to raise understanding and awareness about their topic and lead related Outreach activities that benefit the local community. For the rest of the academic year, Year 7 School Council members will be taking part in a pilot SASP project, focusing on Environmental Sustainability. We look forward to sharing updates from Year 7 throughout the year.

The Year 7 Committee will be drawing their Social Action and Service outreach phase to a close in the last week of the Summer Term, with a ‘re-wilding day’ dedicated to moving, recycling, repainting and replanting disused flowerbeds from the school grounds. These raised flowerbeds are currently stored behind the tennis courts in a state of disrepair. The committee plan to move them into the central playground space for all students to see and enjoy, planting them with wild flowers and grasses to attract insects and birds and making our shared space nicer to be in. They plan to continue this project into the Autumn term, joining with students from the Bee-Keeping club to maintain the flowerbeds and hedgerows surrounding them, and working on transforming the roof garden pond to support wildlife and fish. The committee recorded a persuasive pitch on the roof garden for SLT members, to convince the school to grant the committee the money and time needed to put their project in place – with great success!

Healthy Schools

Healthy Schools Awards are granted to recognise a school’s achievements in supporting the health and wellbeing of their pupils. 

SPW has achieved a Gold Award for the work on Antibullying. 

We are in the process of working towards achieving a new gold award - watch this space!
