This term our Year 1 students had an exciting trip to the Soanes Centre, a park which used to be a cemetery.

They explored the science and wonders surrounding nature and the ecosystem, getting a hands-on experience and learning about plants, fungi and wildlife.

The children got to use magnifying glasses to closely investigate the look of different plants and bugs within the nature reserve. They collected a variety of different twigs and sticks even getting the chance to smell fresh duckweed pulled straight out of the pond!

The children also had the unique opportunity to feel the different textures of various fungi growing within the ecosystem. They learned about how they grow and the benefits it provides to the wildlife surrounding it.

During their nature walk, they spotted a red admiral butterfly, and learned about how it hibernates during the winter only to emerge from its cocoon in spring.

It’s been a brilliant opportunity to understand the natural changes and impacts different seasons have on animals. “I learned a lot about the bees pollinating today,” said Nia.

The experience gave the students an appreciation of protected habitats for both plants and animals. “It’s less and less frequent that children get to go outside and experience nature, so this trip got them to know there is a whole world outside,” Said, Jackir, a volunteer parent.

Class teacher Ms. Khatun, said, “This trip gives them the opportunity to experience more, linking to one of our core values of aspiration and being inspired by what’s around you.”

Just like our mascot Aspiration Adam, the students of St Paul’s Way were inspired by the natural world and gained curiosity and love for nature, learning beyond the classroom.
