Last week SPW hosted its annual Battle of the Books competition in celebration of World Book Day. The event saw teachers passionately pitching their favourite books while students cast their votes to decide the winners. What began as a lively and chaotic week in the library quickly transformed into a remarkable display of reading enthusiasm across the school.

This year, the results were extraordinary. Almost 100,000 votes were cast, representing a 600 per cent increase on last year. Students were seen forming teams around the books they wanted to champion, proving that reading can inspire lively discussion, collaboration, and healthy competition. The sheer scale of participation demonstrates the growing impact of the school’s investment in its library resources.

The Battle of the Books is more than just a competition. By turning reading into an exciting spectacle, the school sends a clear message to the whole community that books are worth celebrating.

This initiative has also contributed to a wider trend in increased library borrowing, with a 33 per cent rise in books loaned during Spring 1 compared to last year. Across St Paul’s Way, Sir William Burrough and St Paul’s Primary, over 13,500 books have been put directly into students’ hands this academic year, supported by generous book giveaways and vouchers.

Such engagement ensures that no student can feel that reading is unimportant. The event highlights the joy and possibilities that books can bring, encouraging students to explore new ideas, stories and worlds.
